Ladino was a dialect spoken wherever colonies of Spanish Jews (Sephardim) formed after their expulsion. More than 170,000 who refused to convert to Catholicism left Spain in 1492. The majority settled in various parts of the Ottoman Empire in such large metropolitan centers as Alexanhdria, Adrianople, Constantinople, Cairo, Jerusalem and Salonika. This CD features 15 hauntingly beautiful songs sung in Ladino by Metropolitan Opera tenor, Nico Castel, an outstanding interpreter of Sephardic Song.
