The Ultimate Klezmer is the largest known collection of klezmer music in print and is an important early collection of klezmer tunes. It is a collection of the lead sheets of the well-known klezmer musician Wolff Kostakowsky and was first published by his son Nat Kostakowsky in 1916.
Wolff Kostakowsky was a Russian-born klezmer violinist who emigrated to the US in 1892, where he soon became a well-known musician and a master violin instructor.
The collection includes over two-hundred and fifty tunes, typologically organized and from what is now Romania, Poland, Russia, the Ukraine and Hungary and includes numerous examples from the klezmer core repertoire: freilachs, shers, chosidls, horas and sirbas.
Together, these selections form a cross-section of the standard repertoire of Klezmer musicians as it existed in the first two decades of the 20th century on American soil. It includes an extensive introduction, photos, a selected discography and annotations.
